This is a great video about design,  cut from the documentary: “Objectified”. Later on in the video, after the 2 minute mark,  Jony Ive of Apple talks about functional design. Amongst other things, the clearest lesson to gather here is that good design is simple.

Ok, I followed those great instructions in the previous post and voila.

Dismantled and awaiting Digitizer

I was worried about breaking things, so I was a little cautious, but a little pressure along the edges with a small flat screwdriver did the trick.

I suspect there are more people than just me who accidentally let their mobile phones slip gently to the floor.   I guess that you could consider yourself lucky that your phone didn’t fall into the bath, like some poor people on Ebay..   In my search for a new digitizer

Your phone has a touch sensor to navigate from screen to screen, function to function , when your front glass breaks on your iphone you have to replace the glass and the digitizer(which is the touch sensor) in order to function correctly. Just replacing the glass without the digitizer will render your iphone useless because the iphone won’t sense your touch to navigate. – onsitecellularrepair.com

Similar damage to my phone..

I dropped the phone on the floor about a month ago (not really very hard, but enough to crack the screen across its width) with my Orange Mobile contract still pretty early on in its life.   As it still worked perfectly, I made the odd joke about it being a new app and that it wasn’t a crack at all.    Not particularly humorous, but illustrates the point that your phone can still work even with a pretty horrible crack.

A couple of days ago, the crack got worse, developed more into a shatter, and the touch part stopped working completely, leaving me completely unable to access the phone.   If anyone knows of any button shortcuts to get into the Orange San Francisco, the ZTE blade equivalent, please post a comment below.   I certainly couldn’t find one, leaving me with unread messages, unanswerable calls and no access contact details, so I couldnt even get the number off the phone to return the call from a landline or another mobile.

So, called the insurance company to see whether I was covered..  Yes, but £50 excess.. hmm

Popped into the Orange Shop in Bristol, really helpful guy, which is unusual for Mobile Phone shops, by all accounts.   He suggested that it was going to be expensive if you go the route of repairing it through them (remember that these phones only cost £100 new), and suggested a high street repair shop.   This was still going to set me back £60 odd.   So that, plus the £50 excess that I would have to pay..   None of this added up.

I had previously done some searching on the net and found that one could order a digitizer on Ebay (bought one for under a tenner), and then follow the instructions on how to replace your cracked screeen, and hey presto, the theory is that you should have a new phone for very little..

Here’s holding thumbs!   I ordered it today, so I will take some photos and post how it goes..

The launch of iOS5 is imminent and along with this particular launch, come many new software enhancements. They are all neatly packaged in Apple’s trademark slick style into iOS5.

One improvement we are particularly excited about is iMessage which lets you message other iPhone users for free (when on WiFi). You may incur a charge on 3g networks. Will this mean a radical shift away from paying SMS costs? As Apple finally catch on to the success of BBM, (thats BlackBerry shorthand for BlackBerry Messenger I gather) will this form of communication catch on?

The answer is a resounding yes. Most young people text WAY more than they speak on the phone and naturally they will gavitate towards the free options. Many of which abound already, think of the tons of iPhone Apps in the app store that do this: Pingchat, Viber and of course the big names like GoogleTalk, Skype and probably to a lesser degree for iPhone users, the Windows Live Messenger app. The launch of iMessage will seriously reduce traffic to these apps.

I for one am excited that I’ll be paying less for my iPhone usage – lets hope Apple has figured out a way for non iPhone users to get inon the action as well. I doubt it.

I love to watch good golfers on the range at Pro Golf Tournaments, and found a good quality video clip of tiger hitting driver on the range.   I created this images by doing nothing but pausing the slow motion video and taking a screenshot, you can try this for yourself.

I am amazed that the club is trying so hard to get ahead of his hands and reduce the clubhead lag.

The golf shaft is critical to the performance of the club and the golfer. It is vital for the intermediate to advanced golfer to be aware of the flex point, also known as the “kick point” in the shaft.   This is yet another factor that can either enhance or hinder your on-course performance.

Most small businesses I have had the privilege of dealing with have little concept of what type of work a website needs. Certainly, different sites have different goals and varying needs. However most small business owners think that a web site will generate them business.

A way this can happen is if their web site is constantly updated with great content, excellent writing and interesting photographs and even useful videos. Why? Because search engines like Google value great content over all other things and the small business site will rise to the top of the search results. Naturally this content needs to be focussed on certain chosen keywords and be a useful and exciting read while new articles need to published with a consistent regularity. This is no easy task.

Once the firm has moved the cogs into place and the content machine whirs into action, the website will start to attract visitors. People will start to notice and thats where the tricky stuff starts. We need to convert those visitors into customers or at least start a relationship with them. Newsletter signups, comments and even phone calls or walk ins to tbe showroom can result from this. All possibly leading the customer down the long process to a sale. The entire journey can and should be statistically tracked using modern analytics programmes in order to measure the effectiveness of the companies content output to sales.

Why do so many comapnies not do this effectively? I haven’t even mentioned the many other sources of traffic like social media, affiliated sites and the power of getting a good article republished on a popular site. Shouldn’t your business be following a plan similar to this?

At Orange Ocean Internet, we are sick and tired of all these “Get Rich Quick Schemes” that are everywhere on the Internet. In our opinion they undermine the usefulness and usability of the web, which we believe has the potential to be the next frontier.

These sorts of sites make a mockery of “Real Websites” who are trying to provide a useful service, and only serve to clutter the space and take the attention away from great sites.

Fortunately most of these sites are pretty shoddy and pop up and down with great rapidity that they are not too much of a problem to sites who invest in proper SEO services. The problem arises where the smaller website with a lesser budget and fewer technical skills, but still aspiring to provide great service is now swamped by these fools.

We have a spare domain name (FibreGolf.com) which is currently on the backburner, and wanted to assist in this fight against spam. So we have created this website directory to try to sift out the wheat from the chaff and will only allow legitimate work from home and freelance opportunities list here. This will be very strictly controlled and each listing manually vetted.
